Knitted mittens in garter st worked sideways from side to side



Size: S/M (M/L)

Materials:100 g red
50 g off white
50 g midnight blue

STRAIGHT NEEDLES SIZE 6 mm – or size needed to get 15 sts x 28 rows in garter st = 10 x 10 cm.
CROCHET HOOK SIZE 4.5 mm - for edge.

GARTER ST (back and forth on needle):
K all rows.

INC AT THE TOP: Inc by making 1 YO on each side of the middle 2 sts on needle every other row - beg this inc on 1st row. On next round K YO twisted (i.e knit in back loop of YO instead of front) to avoid holes.

STRIPES: Cast on with midnight blue and 4 rows in garter st - switch to off white and work 4 rows in garter st - switch to red and work in garter st until finished measurements. Work the thumb with red.

MITTEN:
Worked from mid on top of hand as follows - read the entire pattern before beg:
Cast on 62 (70) sts on needle size 6 mm with midnight blue and insert a marker on each side of the middle 2 sts. Inc for INC AT THE TOP - see explanation above - while at the same time working in garter st and with stripes as explained above.
When 6 (7) ridges (1 ridge = 2 rows in garter st) have been worked (= 12 (14) new inc sts on needle), work next row as follows:

RIGHT MITTEN:
Work 37 (42) sts, cast off 15 (17) sts, slip 7 (8) sts on a stitch holder (= thumb), cast off 15 (17) sts.

LEFT MITTEN:
Cast off 15 (17) sts, slip 7 (8) sts on a stitch holder (= thumb), cast off 15 (17) sts, work 37 (42) sts.

Now work the inside of hand over the 37 (42) sts as follows - beg at the bottom:
Work until 6 (7) sts remain at the top, turn piece and work back (tighten thread to avoid a loose first st). Work next row until 5 (6) sts remain at the top, turn piece and work back. Continue to work the same way but turn when 4 (5) sts remain, then 3 (4) sts etc. until 1 st remains at the top, turn piece and work back (= in the middle of palm). Now work until 2 sts remain at the top, turn piece and work back. Continue to work the same way but turn when 3 sts remain, then 4 sts etc. until 6 (7) sts remain at the top, turn piece and work back. Work 1 row over all 37 (42) sts while at the same time casting off as follows: Cast off 15 (17) sts, slip 7 (8) sts on a stitch holder (= thumb) and cast off 15 (17) sts.

ASSEMBLY:
Sew mitten tog mid on top of hand by sewing cast on edge tog in front loop of outermost st.

THUMB:
Slip the 7 (8) sts from stitch holders on to same needle = 14 (16) sts. Work in garter st with red while at the same time inc on each side of the middle 2 sts - read INC AT THE TOP. At the same time K tog the first 2 sts and the last 2 sts on every other row (= 14 (16) sts on all needles). After 7 (8) ridges have been worked, work all sts tog 2 by 2 = 7 (8) sts on needle. Cut the thread and pull it through the remaining sts, tighten tog and fasten. Sew side seam on mitten in front loop of outermost st with little stitches. Knit another mitten.

CROCHET BORDER: Crochet around the opening of mitten with 1 thread red on hook size 4.5 mm as follows: 1 dc in first st, * 2 ch, skip 1 cm, 1 dc in next st *, repeat from *-* and finish with 1 sl st in first dc.
